The Tarka Trails runs through Barnstaple- perfect for keen cyclists and walkers. There are pit stops along the trail with a brilliant café and estuary views at Fremington Quay, waterside restaurants in Instow, and an array of places to eat in Braunton to fuel your journey back home.
If tranquil well-kept gardens are your thing, you'll want to drive the 25mins down to RHS Rosemoor. Rosemoor is beautifully nestled within the Torridge Valley near the old town of Torrington. Its stunning vistas and diverse foliage take you on a trip around the world with plenty of tea-rooms, art galleries, sculptures and seating along the way.
The pretty seaside village of Instow is a 15-minute drive away and is great for sunset dinners by the water. In summer months, board the small ferry over to Appledore for a delicious meal or to listen to live music in one of the inviting pubs. Enjoy beach days galore and visit Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands, Croyde, Putsborough or Woolacombe, all of which are within a 30-minute drive.
The North Devon coast is a surfing hotspot and you’ll find surf schools and places to whet your appetite at all of these destinations. If you’re heading to Woolacombe, wander the Esplanade in search of the more secluded coves at Barricane, Combesgate and Grunta where you can enjoy epic sunsets, Sri-Lankan curries and seal-spotting.
Make the 20-minute drive to the edge of Exmoor National Park, which is perfect for inland adventures; roam the mystical moors in search of wild ponies, swimming spots and dramatic views.
